City lands 2022 B.C. Summer Games

Prince George has been awarded the 2022 B.C. Summer Games. The announcement was made Friday morning at the Kin Centre. The dates for the multi-sport event are July 21-24. Greater Vernon will host that year's B.C. Winter Games. The B.C.

The dates for the multi-sport event are July 21-24. Greater Vernon will host that year's B.C. Winter Games.

The B.C. Summer Games features 18 sports. On average, it attracts 3,700 participants - 2,800 athletes and 925 coaches, managers and officials. Close to 3,000 volunteers are required to successfully host the Games.

Athletes range in age from nine to 19, depending on the sport. The average age is 14.

The estimated economic impact of the B.C. Summer Games is $2 million.

According to a city staff report from 2016, B.C. Summer Games hosts receive $600,000 from the B.C. Games Society to stage the event, with the expectation that the host city puts up $45,000 in cash and $50,000 worth of in-kind support, like facility rentals.

A local host society or board typically raises an additional $50,000 in cash and another $350,000 to $750,000 of in-kind support from the private sector.

Prince George last hosted the Summer Games in 1990.
