Citizen reaps awards from CCNA

The Prince George Citizen has earned six awards from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.

The Prince George Citizen has earned six awards from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.

Four were second place finishes:

- Frank Peebles' story "I was just a rag doll," about a hunter who was attacked by a bear while sleeping in his tent, in the best feature category for newspapers with a circulation over 15,000.

"One board at a time," about McBride's Leonard McCarty and his quest to keep the tradition of the one-person sawmills alive, in the excellence in rural reporting category. Christine Hinzmann wrote the story and James Doyle took the photographs.

- The Alphabet Project, the 26-week series featured in Citizen Extra in which local artists produced a painting based on each letter of the alphabet, in best coverage of the arts, circulation 10,000 and over.

- Best editorial page, circulation over 25,000. This was for the April 9, 2016 edition which featured a cartoon about the lack of Canadian teams in the NHL playoffs, an editorial by Neil Godbout over a mother's complaint that her two daughters were forced to spend the night at a Greyhound bus depot in Valemount, a column by Tracy Summerville on the Republican convention and a letter from a Citizen reader who disagreed with columnist Nathan Giede. 

The three third place finishes were for:

- Hypno-cat!, a photo illustration from Citizen desker Tyler Sabourin to go with a Todd Whitcombe science column about how a parasite cat owners are likely to get from their pet felines could affect their thinking, in the best photo illustration category.

- The digital archive project, a partnership between the Citizen and the Prince George Public Library to post back issues of the newspaper online, in the outstanding community service category, circulation over 10,000.
