A Quesnel resident is stepping forward to champion a decrease in government intervention in the upcoming federal election.

"I think there's really a need, now more than ever before, for a good option for people to vote for somebody that supports smaller government, less taxes, less government intrusion to people's privacy," said Adam De Kroon, who is running as the Christian Heritage Party candidate for Cariboo-Prince George. De Kroon joins Conservative Todd Doherty and Liberal Tracy Calogheros as the riding's confirmed candidates.

"This election, I'm the only candidate advocating for smaller government, in general, and lower taxes," he said.

De Kroon said he would like to see complete income tax exemptions for people who make less than $35,000 per year. He said he's also strongly against Bill C-51 - the controversial anti-terrorism bill passed in the late spring.

A long-time Quesnel resident, De Kroon is also the youngest candidate to put his name on the ballot so far, at the age of 23. He is three years through a bachelor of arts in computer science, works part-time at West Fraser and is also vice-president of an adult soccer league in Quesnel.

His political involvement stretches back into his teen years, becoming a Christian Heritage party member in 2010. De Kroon was recently made the party's B.C. vice president.

De Kroon said he was affiliated with the Conservative party prior to that, but lost respect for the group after what he saw as a change of stance on social issues, such as abortion, as a means to get elected.

The Christian Heritage Party bills itself as Canada's only pro-life federal party, with a platform that includes employment through infrastructure stimulus package, lower and flatter taxes, post-secondary tuition reform and a child-care allowance for families where one parent stays home.
