A Prince George man has been sentenced to one year probation and issued a lifetime firearms prohibition for his role in an attempt to steal a gun safe from a local home three years ago.
Kevin Roy Zaporoski was issued the term Oct. 25 during an appearance in B.C. Supreme Court on a count of break and entering to steal a firearm.
Zaporoski and Earl Wade Johnson were arrested in November 2013 after a homeowner confronted two men upon finding them in the 2200 block Hart Highway house, RCMP said at the time.
The two fled, dropping the safe and speeding off in an SUV that was later located at a 200 block Claxton Crescent home, near Moore's Meadow, where Zaporoski was arrested.
Later, with the help of video surveillance, Johnson was identified and arrested as well. A year later, Johnson was sentenced to almost two years in jail. But with credit for time served in custody, Johnson faced an additional six months less a day.
Zaporoski remains in custody as one of four men accused of the 2012 murder of Jordan Christian Reno. A voir dire on that case remains ongoing at the Prince George courthouse.
