McBride Secondary School is getting its boiler replaced as part of green upgrades at 27 B.C. schools.

Funding for the $345,000 project was announced by the Ministry of Education Wednesday. It fit the requirements of the Carbon Neutral Capital Program, which this year handed out $4.8 million for projects that would cut greenhouse gas emissions.

All upgrades should be finished by the end of March next year.

"Projects were selected based on the specific needs of each district, how well they would save money by boosting energy efficiency, and the school district and energy service provider contributions," the announcement said.

The CNCP offers up to $5 million for projects each year and saves districts an average of $2.1 million per year and reduces an average of 6,417 tonnes of carbon, the ministry said.

"With this program, school districts throughout B.C. have become more energy efficient and reduced their operating costs in the process," said Mike Bernier, Minister of Education, in a statement.
