A Tachie resident is in custody following a stabbing death Sunday on the reserve west of Fort St. James.

Both the 33-year-old suspect and the 31-year-old victim were known to each other, Fort St. James RCMP said. Neither of their names have been released.

Police said they were called to the reserve, a 65-kilometre drive from Fort St. James and part of the Tl'azt'en Nation, shortly after 2 a.m.

On the way out, officers intercepted family members who were transporting the victim to the nearest hospital. The family carried on with one of the officers following.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital in Fort St. James.

As required by the Police Act, the Independent Investigations Office was notified and the agency is assessing the matter as it relates to police officers' actions and the medical assistance provided to the now deceased victim.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact the Fort St James RCMP at 250-996-8269.
