A legal war chest to fight the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project in the courts is $13,000 richer following a fundraising event held in Prince George on Thursday night.

It was hosted by Pull Together, a joint initiative of Sierra Club B.C. and Victoria-based legal defence fund Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs (RAVEN) which aims to raise $300,000 by the end of the month.

To date, $279,000 has been raised and the money will go to defraying the legal fees of six First Nations who have filed actions against the project: Gitxaala, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai'xais, Haida, Nadleh Whut'en, and Nak'azdli.

Held at the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, the event featured a speech from Chief Martin Louie of the Nadleh Whut'en First Nation, a silent auction with donations from local businesses and artists, and performances by the Khast'an drum group, Erika Callawaert and Raghu Lokanathan.
