An air quality advisory was issued late Wednesday afternoon for Vanderhoof because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter that are expected to persist during the night.

People with chronic underlying medical conditions are being urged to avoid strenuous activity and exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease, the Ministry of Environment and Northern Health said in a statement.

Staying indoors and in air conditioned spaces helps to reduce fine particulate exposure, officials added.

The advisory will stay in effect until further notice.
