Four organizations in Prince George and the region are receiving provincial funds to help enhance adult literacy programs.

A total of $64,494 was distributed around the area as part of the $2.4 million the province is handing out to non-profit community groups to offer free literacy training.

The training is tailored to suit the needs of any adult with low literacy ability and is delivered by trained volunteers offering one-on-one tutoring or small-group classes.

The four organizations are the Prince George Native Friendship Centre ($18,000), Robson Valley Support Society ($23,367), Valemount Learning Society ($13,359) and Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy ($9,768).

"Many of us cannot imagine what it would be like to be unable to read a prescription, recipe or a story to our grandchilden. But for some adults, that is their reality," said Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond, in a press release. "By improving reading and writing skills, adult learners gain access to a whole new world of possibilities, skills and experiences."
