529 Garage program is open

Prince George RCMP, along with volunteers, are continuing to help bike owners register their bikes on the digital registration, reporting and recovery network known as 529 Garage.

Prince George RCMP, along with volunteers, are continuing to help bike owners register their bikes on the digital registration, reporting and recovery network known as 529 Garage.

The partnership between RCMP and 529 Garage began in an effort to decrease the rising amount of bike thefts and return more stolen bikes to their owners.

"We urge bicycle owners to take the time to attend one of our events to have their bike(s) registered," said Cpl. Craig Douglass of the Prince George RCMP.

"In addition to our regular events, we will be holding registration events during the lunch hour on Thursdays during the month of August at our municipal detachment on Victoria Street."

The free registration takes about five minutes and owners are asked to provide essential bike information including ownership details, serial number and photos.

If a theft occurs, the information can easily be distributed to other registered riders via an alert feature on the smart phone app.

The information can also be forwarded to police and insurance companies.

Bike registrations will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Pidherny Recreational area (the parking lot at the top of Foothills Boulevard), Aug. 23 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hart Drugs/Home Hardware and Aug. 24 from noon until 1 p.m. at the Prince George RCMP Detachment at 455 Victoria St.

For each bike registered, the owner can enter to win a Norco Storm Mountain Bike donated by Cycle World on First Ave.
