Dickson nails gold at biathlon nationals

In her season-ending race, biathlete Emily Dickson was back on familiar turf – the high platform on the medal podium. The 20-year-old from Burns Lake won the junior women’s (19-20-year-old) individual mass start event Sunday in Charlo, N.B.

In her season-ending race, biathlete Emily Dickson was back on familiar turf – the high platform on the medal podium.

The 20-year-old from Burns Lake won the junior women’s (19-20-year-old) individual mass start event Sunday in Charlo, N.B., covering the 10-kilometre course in 33:30.5.

In other local results, Cole Bender of Burns Lake took gold in the senior boys (15-16 years) 7.5 km individual race, stopping the clock in 27:32.8.

Sarah Beaudry finished sixth out of six in the women’s 12.5 km race, 4:39.9 off the winning pace set by Rosanna Crawford of Canmore. Beaudry had three penalties on the range. Emma Lunder of Vernon was second, 1:36.2 behind Crawford, and Julia Ransom of Kelowna, who announced her retirement from biathlon, won bronze, 1:36.4 behind. Nadia Moser of Whitehorse, Yukon and Megan Bankes of Calgary moved up from the junior women’s class and finished fourth and fifth respectively.  

Jasper MacKenzie of Prince George placed 13th  in the men’s 15 km individual race, which included Canadian Olympic team members Scott Gow, Macx Davies and Christian Gow, all of Canmore, who finished the race 1-2-3 in respective order. MacKenzie was 5:38.3 behind Scott Gow’s 39:30.1 winning time.

Danika Fiala of Prince George, representing the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, finished 12th  in the senior girls race, 6:21.5 behind gold medalist Naomi Walch of Alberta.

In Saturday’s team mixed team relays, Dickson joined forces with Angus Tweedie and Teo Sanchez to win bronze for B.C. in the junior 3 X 6 km event. Beaudry, MacKenzie and Ransom finished third in the men’s/women’s 3 X 6 km relay.
