Honeymooners in Europe training for second ceremony

Wedding bells are ringing again for Olympian Megan Tandy.

Wedding bells are ringing again for Olympian Megan Tandy.

On April 3 at an unofficial ceremony in Squamish she married Ilmar Heinicke, her biathlon coach, and in a few weeks she will repeat their vows and get legally hitched in Heinicke's hometown of Klingenthal, Germany.

The couple met nearly four years ago when Heinicke came to Prince George to take over from Knut Tore Berland as B.C. provincial team coach. Tandy followed Heinicke to Squamish to train with the provincial team and their romance bloomed.

Outside of their families and close friends, they kept their wedding plans a secret until after the Olympics ended.

"Everyone kept it quiet, we didn't really announce it until the first week of the Canadian nationals the first week of March," said Tandy.

They left for Europe this week packing their bikes and plan to rent a motorhome for a 2 1/2-week tour Spain and Italy, followed by the ceremony May 23.
