The federal government has rejected the proposed New Prosperity copper and gold mine, citing concerns raised in an environmental assessment.
In a news release issued Wednesday evening, federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq said her government stands by the environmental review panel's findings, which said there could be significant adverse effects to fish and fish habitat if Taseko were given the green light to proceed with the mine near Williams Lake.
"The government of Canada will make decisions based on the best available scientific evidence while balancing economic and environmental considerations," Aglukkaq said in a news release. "The government will continue to make responsible resource development a priority and invites the submission of another proposal that addresses the government's concerns."
