The 81-year-old woman who died in an apartment fire Sunday afternoon has been identified as Mary Monica Pollard.

The 81-year-old woman who died in an apartment fire Sunday afternoon has been identified as Mary Monica Pollard.

The fire, which started in the bedroom of the condo at 4490 Chatterton Way, was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system before Saanich firefighters arrived, said Battalion Chief Joe Zsidi.

Saanich fire inspectors believe the woman may have suffered a medical incident just before the fire. Pollard was taken to hospital with burns and smoke inhalation and died overnight.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

The B.C. Coroners Service said the family has been notified and asked for privacy.

A neighbour said Pollard’s husband lived in a residential care home in Broadmead. She had a daughter and two sons.

“She was a lovely little lady,” the neighbour said. “She loved her family.”
