Summer nights just got a bit more exciting as Big Brothers Big Sisters offers free community nights at the Rotary Clubhouse at the Kinsmen Complex every Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

The events are open to all families, community members, along with matches and their mentors.

Each Wednesday is themed differently.

July 29 offers capture the flag night at Rainbow Park.

"It's a new program we're running here at Big Brothers Big Sisters Prince George and it's a lot of fun," said Kris Holland, organizer of the program.

"We're hoping to have a really big turnout for capture the flag so we can get a really big game going."

Participants are divided into two groups and each hides a flag, the goal is to capture the opponents' flag before they capture yours, said Holland.

Aug. 5 is board and Wii game night, where depending on the age of the people participating, there could be Monopoly being played right alongside Chutes and Ladders while others could be in a virtual dance off on the big screen using a Wii Game.

"We've also got an air hockey table as well," said Holland.

Aug. 12 is Pilates Night, which is an opportunity to try something new or get in an extra night of exercise. Pilates is a form of exercise that improves flexibility while building strength, improving coordination, balance and endurance throughout the body.

Aug. 19 is Art Day.

"Because we can never have too much art," said Holland.

"I'm such a big fan."

There will be oil pastels, with guidance offered by an instructor on how to blend colours.

There will be water colour crayons to experiment with where techniques are combined like regular colouring with a blend of water colour art styles, said Holland. There will also be jewelry making using beads and braiding.

"August 26 is the last of the community nights for the summer so it's our wrap-up night," said Holland.

"So we're actually going to try to tie in all the activities that we've done throughout the summer."

So there might be outdoor games, including busting out the Nerf guns, as well as doing chalk murals on the cement wall of the Big Brothers Big Sisters office building.

"It would be just fabulous to decorate with some gorgeous chalk murals to last the rest of the summer," said Holland.

"It's a good way for people to leave their own little mark."

This is a program Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to continue into the fall, said Holland.

"So we're going to keep pushing and growing and any feedback people would like to give us about what they'd like to see us do, I am more than happy to hear."
