‘Elvis’ here for a hip-shaking good time

No blue Christmas around here, not with Elvis about to enter the building. Steve Elliott, one of the most acclaimed Elvis tribute artists to ever slick his hair, will bring a trio of Presley presentations to P.G. this week.

No blue Christmas around here, not with Elvis about to enter the building.

Steve Elliott, one of the most acclaimed Elvis tribute artists to ever slick his hair, will bring a trio of Presley presentations to P.G. this week.

Tonight is Elliott's second of two nights at the Treasure Cove Casino show lounge performing a Christmas show as done by The King back in the day - his best seasonal songs and holiday hip-shakes.

Saturday's concert is a special event. It's done once a year in Prince George; this is the sixth annual edition of Elvis: The Gospel Concert. It is a fundraiser for the Northern Friends of Children Society, which takes financial burden off of families dealing with significant healthcare costs when a child needs treatment.

"We always do it at the First Baptist Church where the room is perfect for this show, and it sounds so good in there," said Glen (Moose) Scott of Three Amigos Entertainment Group, the production hosts of the event. Scott is a big Elvis fan, so this show is a personal pleasure for him as well as a chance to help out an organization that means so much to the community.

"Elvis won all his Grammy awards for his gospel music," said Scott. "He sang all sorts of gospel songs, and they were the ones that won the big awards."

His first Grammy was for the album How Great Thou Art, winning the Best Sacred Performance category in 1967. He won it again in 1972 for the album He Touched Me. A live recording of the single How Great Thou Art won him his third Grammy in 1974.

"He grew up in that all his life. His family was involved in the church so he was raised that way," said Scott.

The First Assembly of God Church was the first Elvis attended. It was built by his uncle, and is a tourist attraction today in Tupelo, Miss. He also attended all-night gospel singalongs at Ellis Auditorium where he heard the styles of music that would shape much of his music. The church's pastor and his two uncles would be his first guitar teachers.

"Steve Elliott is such a complete kind of Elvis performer, he really can do it all. We came up with the idea six years ago that since he was in town anyway doing the Elvis Christmas show, why not do a gospel concert to be a fundraiser," said Scott.

Tickets are $35 each, at A&D Power Equipment, Eric's World of Leisure, Bibles For Mission Thrift Store, First Baptist Church office, or call Scott at 250-640-0297.
