Workers from West Coast Amusements set up the midway for this year's BCNE that opens on Thursday at the exhibition grounds.

The BCNE has been opening its gates since 1912 and today is Day 1 for the 2016 edition.

The city's fall fair is loaded with agriculture, history, culture and entertainment.

The doors officially open today at 10 a.m. for the food court, 4-H shows, many of the static displays, and the live local entertainment.

The midway rides fire up at noon today.

Acts like Zahirah Belly Dance, Vanessa Wittstruck, Nechako Community Theatrics Society, Angel Aerial Fitness, and many more will be performing live from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the event mainstage.

Some of the key features on the entertainment slate include the finals for the Limelight Quest competition going on Friday, country star Rod Black (formerly the frontman for rock band Jet Black Stare) in concert on Friday, and local country singer-songwriter Rick Stavely headlining the Stetson Stomp dance on Saturday.

For the second year in a row, the resurgent rodeo crowd will have plenty of athletes - human and animal - to marvel at.

The events include bareback, saddle bronc, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping and everyone's main draw: bull riding.

The BCNE rodeo also showcase youth events like steer riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and peewee barrel racing.

The BCNE also offers special events like chainsaw carving, the firefighter games, the home and horticulture displays, draft horse events, a petting zoo, a market full of vendors, beer gardens and a Sunday pancake breakfast.
