Well said, travhops! Emery Barnes did try living on "Social Assistance" for himself, and apparantly had a really hard time of it--and the rates were better as opposed to the cost of living at the time (I think).

I wonder just how many people are going to get displaced because of the Olympics? China displaced over a million people, some with only an hour's notice (source: CBC Newsworld).

I can't wait till May. You can bet, too, that if I hear of anyone in my little corner of town that needs my help getting to the voting booth, they've got it. - allniter

I can certainly relate to that Sheldon. My favorite is the corner store across from the old Yellowhead. It has sloped sidewalks on both sides of the store for wheelchair access. One has an oil display blocking access and the other side has an ice machine. Do you have your name in with the E Fry Society. After 8 years of struggling to find affordable, wheelchair accessible places, I got one of their townhouses. It's affordable and completely accessible. PG has come a long way since I've been in a chair. We definitely need more housing but don't see that happening soon with the current government. Personally I'd like to see Mr. Campbell try to rent a place and survive on a Disability Pension for 3 months. I hope disabled persons and seniors get to the polls. We're a huge voting power and I'd love to see the people he's hurt most be the deciding votes to toss him out. - travhops

Thanks for the support everyone. Yes, I have considered moving to Alberta, but the majority of my family is in BC; so its a half-or-half thing. My main goal is to learn where the Liberals came up with $375 for rent; I'd love to sit down with the minister and have them tell me how I can rent an apartment for that and still have a life? Another objective of mine for PG is wheelchair accessibility; just because a building is old doesnt mean it cant be modified. There are still many public resteraunts and bars in our city which are unaccesable. - ihuman2

Uh,first of all employed people in Kelowna are having a hard time paying the rent and well...being employed.1 Bedroom appartments are going for 900 or more a month. The only thing a person on disability could afford is a cardboard box. Second of all while 25 years olds can be very responsible and have had many experiences with screwed up and sick family members. Its a simple fact that they lack maturity and life experience to be able to effectively handle things. If they did have the maturity and experience that they so claim, Amber would be consulting a lawyer for dear ol dad,she would know his rights. While I left home at 17 and at the age of 17-25 cared for an ailing grandparent and had many many experiences,if I had enough experience and maturity my grandparent wouldnt have died a horrible death at the hands of doctors and their practice of over drugging seniors.I also would have stood up to the home care workers who were stealing from this grandparent on a regular basis.I am now 30 something and if that was happening now you can better bet I would be raising hell.
We must all realsie that most 25 year olds think they know it all so why make a big deal of it.Amber learn to spell.Sheldon, consider moving to Alberta, some how, some way.I believe that there are better resources there for handicapt people due to a gov that actually sees people as humans. Not like the royal horses ass that is currently destroying our province. - peterson

I agree with Jules...and I think I owe an appology for saying anything that might have hurt anyones feelings. And cookieangel...do not waste anymore of your time on people like these. I like to laugh at Vogel and I will throw comments their way for a damn good laugh but after the same comments it just gets old. I will say my points and if I have anything to add I am going to leave it at that. Some of the people on here can be very narrow minded and although its frustrating thats who they are. You know...I have decided that these people are not worth my time nor should you think so. The only place its going to get you is where I am at....hated because people believe you should be stupid for what you believe in or better yet...even more stupid for the things you know. So as sad as it is to not be allowed a say...we better just keep to ourselves and no longer make posts...because cookieangel...people like me and you are not accepted. We are not allowed to have a voice...and thats okay I guess. - AmberEN

Oh lord someone finally said something to you two and you didnt like it but you still have to turn the tables to save face dont you. Yes my words are hateful but you know what its because of reading all the rude and hateful things towards other people from you two that make me blow the way I have. I have read Ambers words and she did sound arrogant but I did not throw that in her face and then continue to put her down for it. I may not agree with what she is saying but that does not make me think she is arrogant or stupid and all the things you people seem to think she is just because you dont agree with what she thinks or knows. I dont agree with everything that Amber says but that does not make her unexperienced. How in the world do you know what any of these people have been through on here when they speak of such things? Do you know these people and especially Amber personally to make that judgement and call that she is to young to have this knowlage or experience in life? Do you know personally what they have or have not been through? How do you know that even half of the people on here are lying about who they really are? Or better yet...do you look these people up just to find out weather they are lying or not so you can call them down and call them stupid and unexperienced? Do you do that kind of homework on people you do not know? Then dont be so harsh to judge if not and dont sit there and accuse people of such things as you do. I hope your clown and cheeseburger make you happy Vogel you need all that you can get. - cookieangel

I think you all have to reel yourselves in a bit. At some point, someone has to throw the towel in. This site can be educational, however, it can also be a venue for spewing malarkey. Maybe, you all shouldn't take yourselves so seriously? Having the last word isn't always important. Oftentimes, tapping out of the debate while you still make sense is more important. Keep things in perspective.....this site isn't going to solve the World's problems. As evidenced, this site has an entertainment value much like Karaoke or mechanical bull riding. Have fun and try to be polite..... - Jules

... maybe you need to re-read your own words. and perhaps you need to re-read Amber's first opinion, saying how she is not trying to sound arrogant but.... yeah we are all entitled to our opinion, yourself included, my opinion was that she came off sounding extremely arrogant and my personal opinion right now is that you sound crazy.... talk about ugly and hateful, read your own words..rage, rage rage, - Mom1

You two have got to be the most ignorant people on this site. Does it make you feel big to pick on people who have an opinion and a RIGHT to speak their opinion. Vogel especially. Your the saddest excuse of a human I have ever seen. I come on here every day and everytime I come on here I see you doing nothing but being as ignorant as you possibly can and then when someone has a REAL comment you put them down yet again. You think that what you have to say is more important then anyone else and yet what you have to say 98% of the time is just gibberish and nothing but a bunch of hot air. You people need to grow up on here. Everyone is entiltled to their opinion why is it that you find the people you dont care for and bash them as much as you can just because you think they are not worth voicing their opinion. How in God's name would you like it if everyone ganged up on you? Oh wait a min..if someone did you probably would go to your fridge...gourge yourself on all that crappy things in there you can think of because your life is so miserable your probably those people who eat their emotions and then you rage...oh and you rage and rage and rage and you take it out on the peole you think are worth nothing because you are worth nothing and nobody cares about you because look at how you act. Bunch of losers...there someone said it and I am amazed it wasnt any of the people you pick on. I hope you look at yourselves in the mirror everyday and see the same discust looking back at you that I see in just your words. You are very ugly and hateful people. Seek help before they know your coming...... - cookieangel

what if you talked to the mayor or someone who in office? I know where I come from if you need something bad enough they usually bend over backwards and the majority of the time you do get what it is you are setting out to get.

I think... maybe.... she is trying to say she doesn't know everything about everything, she knows nothing about everything and she is very happy to share that with all of us... at a very young age... oh yeah, and she is a very quick learner... yet she hasn't figured out that she is making a fool of herself... and there was something in there about turning 40, but I don't know what the hell that has to do with anything...

hope that helps :-) - Mom1

It strikes me as odd that you have a hard time believing that someone young might not have life skills. I am 25 years old and I learn lessons very fast. My Dad is not 50 as I stated he is IN his 50's. He will be 56 this year. I dont claim to know everything I go off of experience and knowlage that I do have in the people (or myself) experiences at the time or in the past. You obviously wouldnt believe on how many experiences that I have had. I was 16 when I lived on my own (for personal reasons that are my own) and have worked since then. I have had alot of experience with being down and under and at an all time low all from being close to homelessness...to living off of oatmeal for weeks on end....to getting screwed over by roommates who turned into drug addicts...to having family members who are such and alcoholics...to having disabled family memebers and me having to care for them...to having my Gran dying of cancer and me watching while taking care of her during that time. I have went to school and gotten education in medical ect. Yes...I have alot of experience...do I know everything...No...I know I dont and I will admitt that. I talk about the knowlage that I have in what I have learned through myself or others close to me. I have an open mind to other peoples knowlage...if I disagree with what they are saying I say so but that does not mean I am saying I am right....I believe I am right in what I believe but that does not make you wrong nor does it make my views wrong. It may strike you as odd that some one so "young" can experience life as it can be...but I have from a very young age. I research alot of things that I see....and as I said...learn rather quickly. I wished this person all the best and I ment that. But if people like you are going to stop people like me from speaking my mind then maybe all the rest of us "young" folk should take a step back and not speak up in our tiny voices because apparenly we are not to know such things until what age?? 40ish? - AmberEN

Although I don't claim to have Amber's vast experience and knowledge, as a disabled person I fully understand Sheldon's dilemma. Disability does not take into consideration the extra hardships people in the north face, i.e. snow, cold weather, the beating wheelchairs take, etc. I know several people who moved down south because of better climate, more access to disabled housing, access to more employment. My suggestion would be to talk to your doctor, medical personnel and try to get them to write letters to Disability stating it would be beneficial physically and emotionally for you to be able to move. Independence for a disabled person is hard to achieve and kudos to you Sheldon for trying and persevering. - travhops

Amber, it strikes me as odd that no matter what the subject you seem to have had experience or first hand knowledge of someone who has had that exact same experience, etc etc. If your dad is only 50, you must be quite young yourself and it amazes me that someone so young can have so many "experiences". From seeing most peoples responses to your posts it seems they are getting tired of your "been there, done that" know it all attitude. Find a job. And to add more fuel to the fire, I am sure is Sheldon was native (I'm assuming he is not) that he would have no problem getting a helping hand in this province. Good luck to you Sheldon. I hope you get the help you need. I wouldnt complain at all as a taxpayer helping a disabled person becoming more independant. - MustBMe

I for one would rather see my tax dollars helping people get a hand up to independence. The original purpose of social services was a stepping-stone to said independence, and the Liberals have turned social services around to nothing more than an enabling agency. Nowadays if you are a worker with potential who needs a little help stepping out of the hole you're pretty much screwed, and that is not only completely wrong, it is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. - allniter

AmberEN - Maybe you should be counting your blessings... your Dad has health care that covers the cost of those tests.. after tests... after tests... and I am sure medication (blood thinners, perhaps) that allow him to continue working to pay for food and rent, etc. Be thankful that we have a system in place that pays all those bills, so that your dad doesn't lose everything he has trying to find out what is medically wrong with him... He can't get disability, be thankful that you are healthy enough to work a little harder to help him out in his time of need, some people aren't so lucky. And just so you know, disability is not determined by which town you live in, so regardless of where you reside, the disability claim would still be denied. I wish him the best and hope he recovers.

Sheldon - you seem to be trying hard to be soley independent with many obstacles in your path... I applaud you for your determination and strength. I wish you all best. - Mom1
