Downtown is Downtown

It's like slapping lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig. I think it's great this group is interested in making downtown a living breathing entity but first you have to have the people interested in going downtown. Painting murals would be beautiful. I'm all for it. But first clean those damn sidewalks of vomit and spit and glass and crap. Wash the windows and clean the urine off the walls and from the entranceways. Downtown is one big toilet except for speciality avenue and the odd other spot. George street is a mess and no one seems interested in cleaning it up.

You can put all the fancy sidewalk work in and get rid of the pawn shops and check cashing stores but if it's filthy it'll still look like a dumpy area. Better to make downtown an attractive place by soap and water and paint. Then by all means paint those beautiful murals and put in the energy efficient buildings. - Buddy

I think you answered your own question (on a separate thread) about what the person meant when he said "take Canada back from the politicians".

You talked about "REAL LIVE REGULAR HUMANS who happen to give enough of a crap about our city that they actually offer to volunteer their time to attend a meeting to try to help"...and also noted that "everyone who wishes to try to plan and contribute for a more positive future (should)get off their ass to do something about it".

It looks to me like you are on the same page and not giving yourself credit for it! You obviously know what it takes to make something happen, as I just quoted your own action plan above!

Canadians need to stop just going to the ballot box and electing another talking head for 2-4 years, another greedy or indifferent suit with a personal agenda, who does not or is not willing to see what the masses see, or what they need. We can't keep just trusting politicians to get into office and have all the right answers, make all the right decisions. They all start out as well-meaning individuals who want to make a difference, then somehow get sucked into the vortex of waste that is politics. Very little gets accomplished by City Hall, or Victoria, or Ottawa, that citizens with a little pride and interest in their microcosm couldn't do on their own...for less money and quicker!

Politicians, in trying to be all things to all people and preserve their jobs and their gold-plated pensions, simply lack backbone and the ability to end wasteful tax & spend policies. They see the public trough as an endless supply of free dough to chase hair-brained initiatives. They want ultimately to be SEEN to be doing a lot (i.e. studies, consultation, etc) without actually having to be RESPONSIBLE for making the final decisions on anything that they might have to be accountable for.

So, if we had far less apathy and more action (as you suggest) and far more than the 20-30% voter turnout in most elections...we might actually be able to trounce the wasteful and self-serving buggers...thus sending a message to the next crop of politicos that we are "taking our country back" and won't settle for endless taxation and wasteful policies. - tombstone81

Well if you can't stand the heat.....

Your first post is insulting and could also be taken as an attack on those who attended that meeting, so if you want to dish out the harsh comments then don't be so sensitive about receiving some rather harsh feedback. I don't understand your point about whether or not we choose to use our real names or some "silly" name, that choice too should be cherished...there may be some darn good reasons that some of us choose to remain anonymous. - Buzz

While I admit to also being somewhat puzzled by your initial posting (which appears to have been censored now by a web admin?)...your response to the anticipated outcry is hilarious! You are indeed correct; by the time people stop passing the buck and fattening the wallets of "consultants" and "analysts" to decide whether or not to run you out of town on a rail...everyone will have long forgotten why they wanted to blackball you in the first place. - tombstone81

Bring on the torches and pitchforks! Perhaps I should have tempered my original post by saying that slapping a coat of paint on a rotten wall (so to speak) will not add to its structural integrity. This is a very public and somewhat free forum for voicing opinion. We should cherish that. I welcome dissenting opinions but when the responses become personal attacks, I will draw the line. I sign my posts with my real cognomen, not some silly, anonymous web-name that I could hide behind. I await the inevitable backlash from the regulars and soon expect to ridden out of town on a rail. Of course there must be a publicly funded series of meetings and workshops before any decision can be made (which is de rigueur in our society). Should take about two years. I am a patient man. I can wait. - D.K. Ross

D.K.Ross needs to put up or shut up! "You poor .... haven't got a clue" is about as stupid as statement as I've read in a long time. Guess who those poor people are D.K....they're REAL LIVE REGULAR HUMANS who happen to give enough of a crap about our city that they actually offered to volunteer their time to attend a meeting to try to help. What's your contribution been lately? Your vile comments? Thanks for nothing, and thanks to everyone else who wishes to try to plan and contribute for a more positive future and gets off their asses to do something about it. - Buzz

I agree! I dont think anyone has the right to sit and complain unless they plan on getting off their butt to help figure out what will work best and make it happen. Good for you "Another guest"!! - Angelrayne

Did you go through the trouble of attending this session and sharing your ideas? Clearly not, if you did you would know that the art work comment was one among many. People were asked to write down what their ideal down town would look like. So more art work is that persons ideal, who are you to knock it!

Prince George's biggest problem is the people like you who are perfectly content to sit in their homes and whine and cry about how bad things are and never get off your lazy butt and do something to make a change.

I am sick of people like you that sit and wait for everything to be done for them. The only way things are going to get any better is if the community pitches in and makes it happen - at least that person took the time and effort to attend the workshop and share an idea.

You need to open your eyes and get a clue.
