Is Canfor angling for a province wide monopoly?

This article is much better researched than the article done in another paper from our province. In that article, MLA Bob Simpson displays his lack of understanding about the forest sector and business affairs, in general. I hope he doesn't scare off the bidders with his ignorant analysis.

I maintain this is an empty threat and/or a bargaining position by Canfor -- I wonder if they've put in their own bid on the P&T mill and are hoping to scare off the other bidders? They want out of the chip supply contract BIG TIME, but as P&T never went into arrears on it, they've no legal foothold to get it cancelled.

Heaven help us if Canfor buys P&T as the whole town will be under the thumb of Jimmy Pattison. Do you suppose he'll drive the Co-op out of business by setting up an Overwaitea? - Jacuzzi

I think what the workers don't realize is that businesses aren't there to help workers in the bad times. They want to make money so they can pay their shareholders. They hire workers to work. If you think they care then you're mistaken. Run a business yourself and if you're losing money or having trouble with getting your employees to work to their potential then you close. Number one is the company number two is the shareholders, number three is the many bills they have to pay, number 9,999,999 is the employee. Take a number...

Please don't take this comment to mean I don't think the workers were working to their potential. I was making a generalization. - Katie McLeod

COMPLETE BULLSHIT

Canfor is always playing games.. ever since canfor dicided to buy out all the other mills including what used to be slocan in mackenzie. It rules the roost so to speak. its absolute bullcrap that they can say they are loosing money.. to them if they didn't match the profit from the previous Quarter they call it a loss.. so thats what they call a loss.. Why is it that the government allows them to have so much control over an industry that is the back bone of the Northern Interior as well as the province.. don't they call that a monopoly in the US. I think that if Canfor went broke and the company got broken down and some of the smaller mills around the province bought a few of them up it would be way better for the industry and possibly have more stable jobs when the industry is in a down turn.... It all boils down to government... we pay government officials to look out for us and maks sure we don't get screwed around.. well thats hard when the they are in the big companies back pocket. - sheenaskinner
