There seems to be an awful lot of "poor-bashing" going on lately, too, and that is equally sad. - allniter

Typical behaviour

I've seen this behaviour time and time again in this town. It's discrimination based on race, plain and simple. Some people are just like that and that is what Natives face on a daily basis in this town. It's sad, it really is. - Gagnon

Perhaps the buisness in question has had problems with this in the past, and this is just a knee jerk reaction. I worked in downtown toronto years ago, and they would not sell mouthwash to the homeless. It's not right or fair, but buisiness owners were desperate to rid themselves of being known as " the place where all the drunks hang out". Having said that, it is possible that the clerk just doesnt like natives. - Northstar

I know that a business can refuse service if a customer is being belligerant and/or causing a disturbance--some restaurants post signs saying they reserve the right to refuse service, etc, etc.,...non-payment of an item would be a reason to call management or security. Neither of these criteria fit this event. For all intents and purposes, the man had the money and brought the merchandise to the counter in a proper manner. The clerk clearly overstepped the mark on this one. - allniter

i may be mistaken but i thought that they took the alchohol out of mouthwash instead opting for a non toxic substatute that will in the end make you sick not drunk... for some reason i remember hearing something like that a few years ago...and if that is the case the owner of that particular store can and should be charged by this individual, and if not then still an apology is owed for the discriminate and rude way of handling the situation...heck i have gone to the store to buy just mouthwash when i have forgotten or ran out. - pgboy

Although I agree with Buzz, this is still a free country. If the Dude wanted to drink mouthwash (or merely gargle) it is (was) none of our concern. If he had the $ to pay for his purchase, what's the problem??? There are are too many folks trying to to put their own brand of righteousness on too many people lately. Give us a break! For all you know, he had a job interview... - D.K. Ross

It is highly likely that there is more to this story than the writer knows about. That's still no excuse for being rude to a customer, but don't be too judgemental without knowing all of the 'behind the scenes' facts. - Buzz

Maybe this was the 4th time this person was there buying mouthwash that day. But even if it was........

I do not know what the "laws" are for selling items to people, but I do agree with you that it is non of their business what I am going to do with the mouthwash, vanilla or whatever else it is I might be buying. - djm
