The design of the Kordyban Lodge in Prince George earned Vancouver's NSDA Architects a Sustainable Forestry Initiative award at the Wood WORKS! B.C. Wood Design Awards this week.

The lodge is operated by the Canadian Cancer Society and provides an inexpensive place to stay for out-of-town people who are going to the BC Cancer Agency Centre of the North for treatment.

"Kordyban Lodge is a showcase of the warmth, beauty, versatility and durability of wood from sustainably managed forests," Sustainable Forestry Initiative president and CEO Kathy Abusow said in a news release. "Future forests require responsible forestry and this project is a prime example of the positive contribution that building with wood from sustainably managed forests can make, particularly in a region where the community is supported by the forestry sector."

Many of the certified wood products used in the facility came from the Sinclar Group of Companies and Winton Global Ltd., including engineered roof trusses, prefabricated walls and studs.

The use of wood products in the design of the lodge has practical values in addition to the aesthetics. Studies have shown that exposure to natural products helps with the mental wellness of people who are receiving cancer treatment.

Kordyban Lodge opened its doors last March, a few months after the BC Cancer Agency for the North began offering expanded cancer care to patients in Prince George and the region.
