A Prince George man was sentenced Tuesday to a two month conditional sentence and one year probation for stealing an RCMP bait truck.
Daniel Arvey Webster, 27, was arrested March 25, 2013, a day after he stole a Ford F-350 pickup truck from a cardlock gas station in the BCR industrial site and drove it to the parking lot of a Westwood Drive restaurant where he left the vehicle overnight, the court heard.
The next day, he returned to the truck and then drove it to a spot off 15th Avenue where police, who were monitoring its location, arrested Webster. Police found a pair of pliers on Webster and it's suspected they were used to steal the truck.
Despite his age, Webster does not have a driver's licence and stole the truck because he wanted to learn how to drive, the court heard.
Webster pleaded guilty to one count of theft over $5,000 thus preventing a trial, even though the truck's video recorder had failed. The truck's value was put at $19,000 to $24,000.
A conditional sentence means Webster will serve the term at home. Other than for work purposes and between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m, he is not allowed off the property during the two months.
