    Justin Baker improves to gold medal in men's 60 metre at CIS track championships

    WINDSOR, Ont. - Justin Baker took a couple steps up on the podium at the Canadian university track and field championships on Friday.

    The University of Regina athlete eclipsed his time from a year ago to narrowly edge York University's Chris Theriau in the men's 60-metre hurdle final.

    Baker finished 0.004 seconds ahead of Theriau to take gold with a time of 8.51 to better his third-place last year.

    Western's Matt Brisson finished third in 8.09 seconds.

    It was also a close decision in the women's 60-metre hurdles, with a photo finish required to decide the result between Noelle Montcalm, the CIS women's track athlete of the year, and Jen Cotten, the CIS women's field athlete of the year.

    Windsor's Montcalm eventually was crowned the winner, narrowly beating Cotten with her time of 8.54 seconds. Hayley Warren of McGill rounded out the top three, finishing with a time of 8.79 seconds.

    In the women's 300, Calgary's Amonn Nelson won in 37.92 for her second straight gold in the event ahead of Moncalm (38.73) and Saskatchewan's Sharai Siemens (39.33).

    In the women's 1,000 metre race, Windsor's Melissa Bishop won gold in 2:47.50.

    Megan Brown of Toronto edged out Celia Peters of Dalhousie to clinch the silver. Brown finished with a time of 2:48.35, while Peters finished in 2:48.98 for bronze.

    In the women's 4x800 metre relay, Bishop helped Windsor win its third gold of the day.

    The Lancers won in 8:58.40 ahead of Guelph (8:59.90) and McMaster (9:05.78).

    In the men's 1,000, Queen's University's Matt Hulse held off Windsor's Matt Walters to win gold. Hulse finished in 2:25.08 ahead of Walters in 2:25.34.

    Toronto's Micheal Del Monte finished third in 2:25.37.

    In the men's 4x800, Victoria captured its first gold in 7:37.62. Toronto (7:38.07) slightly edged Laval (7:38.12) for the silver.

    In the women's 3,000, Guelph's Rachel Cliff won gold in 9:21.29 ahead of Toronto's Melanie Brown (9:23.90) and Victoria's Julia Tschanz (9:50.17).

    In the men's 3,000, Guelph's Kyle Boorsma repeated gold with a time of 8:15.09.

    Western's Kyle O'Neil was second in 8:16.42 ahead of Windsor's Dave Weston (8:21.19) in third.

    In the men's high jump, top-ranked Simon Watts of Dalhousie won gold with a jump of 2.07 metres.

    McGill's Justin Darlington narrowly edged Regina's Jeremy Eckert. Both athletes jumped 2.04 metres, but Darlington claimed the silver due to retrogression.

    In the women's pole vault, the same names on the podium in 2009 repeated in 2010.

    York's Heather Hamilton set a new CIS record with a 4.23-metre jump en route to the gold. Leah Vause of Saskatchewan won silver with a 4.00 jump, while Windsor's Erika Reiser took the bronze with a 3.85 jump.

    In the men's 300 metre, Calgary's Sam Effah won gold in 33.76 seconds. That topped York's Dontae Richards-Kwok and Western's Jason Kerr who were 34.31 and 34.51, respectively.

    In the men's weight toss, Guelph's Dustin McCrank threw 18.61 metres for gold.

    Manitoba's Garth Suppes won silver with a throw of 17.36, while Guelph's Tim Hendry took bronze with 17.05.

    In the women's long jump, Jen Cotten scored 5.96 metres for gold.

    Montreal's Tamara Cap won silver with a 5.81-metre jump ahead of Regina's Nicole Breker (5.77).

    In men's long jump, Ottawa's Christopher Greenaway set a new meet and facility record with his 7.88-metre jump en route to the gold.

    Western's Andrew Judge held onto his first jump of 7.18 to win the silver, while Guelph's Guyson Kuruneri took bronze.

    In women's shot put, Saskatchewan's Taryn Suttie set a new CIS record with her 15.32-metre toss to win gold, while York's Cynthia Appiah (14.34) and Elizabeth Petrov (13.90) took silver and bronze.
