Adding to Norman Dales letter about speed on our highways.
A bigger issue in my view is vehicle separation and improper lane use. I am continually astounded on trips to the Lower Mainland, especially on traffic-clogged Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley and Highway 5 (Coquihalla) at the lack of separation between vehicles moving at high speeds. Instances of outright tailgate bullying aimed at clearing the lane ahead are common.
On a recent drive to Vancouver via the Coquihalla (a change of scenery from the relatively sedate Fraser Canyon) the entire northbound lanes were a parking lot for many kilometres, with a rescue helicopter parked on the highway. We saw this going down and were caught in exactly the same scenario coming back.
Police in the U.K. have recently begun cracking down on vehicle separation and improper lane use on the motorways. B..C. needs to give a lot more attention to this aspect of highway safety if we are going to increase speed limits on busy routes.
