New CEO at coal firm

One of the region's premier coal exploration companies, Cardero Resource Corp., has a new boss.

Michael Hunter resigned immediately, effective Tuesday, with no explanation given.

The company has appointed Hendrik van Alphen as its new chief executive officer and president of the company, a 25-year mining veteran who has been with the Cardero Group of Companies since 1999.

Cardero Resource Corp. is the proponent of the Carbon Creek Metallurgical Coal Deposit near Hudson's Hope, on the easternmost arm of Williston Lake.

Should the mine go ahead according to Cardero's plan, the mined coal will be transported by boat down Williston Lake to the railhead at Mackenzie, then transported by rail through Prince George and west to Prince Rupert's coal ports.
