Poulin, T-birds play tough at CIS finals

The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team, which included Prince George forward Dayle Poulin, skated to an extra-time loss, a regulation loss and a victory at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship tournament in Toronto.

The Thunderbirds started with a 5-4 double-overtime setback against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and then dropped a 5-3 decision to the eventual-champion Montreal Carabins. In their last game, the T-birds edged the Queens Gaels 2-1.

In Sunday's final, the Carabins beat the defending-champion Calgary Dinos 3-2.

The T-birds played to a 1-21-2 record in 2011-12 but were Canada West champions this season. After a regular schedule that saw them go 17-7-4, they won playoff series against the Manitoba Bisons, Regina Cougars and the Dinos.

At nationals, UBC bench boss Graham Thomas was chosen as the CIS coach of the year.

Poulin was in her fifth and final season of playing eligibility with the Thunderbirds.
