City committee to mull tax rates

The process to setting how much property tax Prince George property owners pays begins today.

The city's finance and audit committee meet at noon to begin looking at options for the 2013 tax-rate structure.

Last year, council narrowly approved - by a vote of 5-4 - a 3.95 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, with the largest hike borne by the utility property class with an increase of 26.28 per cent. The other tax categories are business, major industry, light industry, farm and not-for-profit/recreation.

During budget deliberation meetings, city council approved a 3.5 per cent increase to the overall tax levy. This consists of a 1.85 per cent increase to the road rehabilitation levy, a one per cent increase to fund a new general infrastructure reinvestment fund and 0.65 per cent increase to fund the general cost of city operations.
