Man gets year for child porn

A Prince George man has been sentenced to one year in jail and three years probation after police found more than 1,000 images of child pornography in his home.

Ronald Richard Boutilier, 48, was issued the term Friday, a bit more than a year after a pest control worker found a compact disc depicting child pornography in his home and alerted the RCMP.

A subsequent search turned up 39,968 pornographic images, of which 1,078 were deemed to be child pornography and 31,554 were child related, judge Darrell O'Byrne was told prior to issuing the term.

It was also noted that in talking to an assessor for a pre-sentence report, Boutilier displayed a lack of insight into the seriousness of his crime and had not sought counselling since he was arrested and charged.

However, there was no evidence that Boutilier was trying to contact minors for sex and that the chances of him committing a so-called "contact" offence were low.

It was recommended that Boutilier be sent to Ford Mountain where programs for sexual offenders are available.

Conditions during his probation upon release included no access to the internet without supervision, to stay away from playgrounds, pools, school yards and other areas where children commonly congregate and to take counselling as directed by the probation officer.

He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample and to be included in the national sexual offender registry for 10 years.
