Ever-popular Juno winner Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne and his band, including local saxophone player Justin Frey, will be starring in a 50s Themed Dance Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Kinsmen Community Complex at 7:30 p.m.
The event is a fundraiser for CFIS 93.1 FM a local community radio station run by the Prince George Community Radio Society.
"We, as a station, need to raise money so we can get more power with our antenna on Connaught Hill," Bill Ollinger, president of Prince George Community Radio Society. "We need to raise close to $20,000 to reach our goal and we'll have several fundraisers this year to help with our cause. We'll do some concerts and a raffle. There's a lot of money involved with the CRTC fees and set up costs and then there's the cost of outside preparation but once we do get full power we're no different than the other stations in town, where we can get more radio out to the people, so to speak."
The radio society is in the final stretches of getting the tower power approved by the CRTC, but Ollinger was quick to say that could mean a six month to a year wait once it's all in place, too.
"So my mandate as being president this year is to get money in, to get our house in order in terms of knowing where the finances are going, knowing where to allocate because that's our number one focus -- getting funds in for this project."
To support the radio station with its fundraising efforts and to have a little fun, Earl Krushelnicki
of Blues Underground Network encourages everyone to dress up in their favourite 50's duds, bring your favourite Valentine and dance the night away.
"It's a great community station, we're still always looking for volunteers and ideas and fundraising
opportunities and we welcome all of it," said Ollinger.
Tickets for the dance are $30 each and are on sale at Books & Co., 1685 Third Ave.
CFIS 93.1 FM helps promote events and projects happening in the community at no charge, including things like the Farmers' Market, Coldsnap Music Festival, Blues Underground dances, local entertainers' events and provide support for organizations like the SPCA and the Community Arts Council.
