The 2015 Canada Winter Games are still two years away but School District 57 is already making plans for the city's role in hosting the two-week event.
Parents of school aged children can count on schools being closed for the duration of the Games, Feb. 13-March 1, 2015.
That will allow students to attend the Games and will create access to school facilities for some of the sporting events. The Duchess Park and Prince George secondary schools gymnasiums are listed as Games venues.
"We wanted parents to have that information as soon as possible," said trustee Brenda Hooker, chair of the board's calendar committee. "It has already been approved [by the previous board] to have the February break scheduled for the 2015 Games."
The education ministry made changes to the School Act in 2012 to give local school boards the authority to make changes to the school calendar.
The board is still working out the final draft of its 2013-14 calendar, which is required for the next public meeting, Feb. 26. Trustees are planning for a two-week spring break in March 2014. This year's break is scheduled for March 16-31.
