A female passenger was killed early Saturday morning in a single vehicle rollover accident on Pacific Street early Saturday morning.

It is the first fatal accident of the year for Prince George.

The vehicle, a white 2012 Ford Escape, was being driven by a 42-year-old man who police believe was impaired by alcohol at the time.

At about 6 a.m., the southbound vehicle left Highway 97, rolled into the ditch, and came to a stop on adjacent Pacific Street in the BCR Industrial site. The car had been reported stolen from a Prince George location on Jan. 15.

The lone passenger, who has still not been identified by RCMP, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was cut out of the vehicle by a Prince George Fire Rescue crew and was transported by ambulance to UHNBC, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Craig Douglass said speed was a factor in the severity of the accident.

"It appears initially it went off the highway and rolled and ended up on Pacific and the evidence at the scene will confirm that," said Douglass. "At this point we're still trying to determine the identity of the woman."

Prince George RCMP traffic services has taken over the investigation, with assistance from North District RCMP personnel.
