CNC celebrates Black History Month

Umoja performs at last year's Black History Month. The band is made up of Jonas Bambi, Janet Renquist, Jacob Madjitey, Michel Aka and Inban Reddy. This year there's a full schedule of events to celebrate February as Black History Month.

The College of New Caledonia is teaming up with the Prince George African Heritage Society to present a series of events to celebrate the 16th annual Black History Month in February.

"Black History Month celebrates the diverse roots of the nation and country we call Canada," said George Kaweesi, Black History Month organizer and CNC instructor. "These events remind everyone that our community is made up of those from near and far and they share a common goal of trying to make it better."

The celebration begins with the Main Event, with a dinner, song and dance, several cooking demonstrations and Family Day to bring the community together for a big party.

"These events also serve as a reminder that people of African heritage have made some significant contributions to this community," said Kaweesi. "That we appreciate it and that we should all learn to work together to build a better society."
