If his Prince George Cougars teammates are correct Daulton Siwak will look similar to Lanny McDonald by the end of Movember.
"I think he can grow the best facial hair,"said Cougars forward Jari Erricson. "He's got a pretty mean beard. He'll get a mean mustache going."
The Cougars will join hundreds of men around the country in November to show support for Prostate Cancer Canada and the Movember Foundation by growing facial hair this month. The Cats players and coaching staff will be raising money through their hair-growing enterprise to go towards an awareness campaign for men's health.
Erricson said he had a bit of fuzz on his upper lip during his 17-year-old season and he's hoping he'll be able to give guys like Siwak a bit more competition this season.
"I'll give it my best effort," said the smooth-faced Erricson. "Hopefully I've matured a bit more."
Cougars defenceman Rinalds Rosinskis didn't hesitate in proclaiming Siwak as the guy to grow the best mustache but head coach Dean Clark observed captain Brock Hirsche might put up a fight.
"We don't have a lot of facial hair growers in that room," said Clark, referring to the fact one-third of the Cats' roster is under 18. "Some of our young guys probably won't even grow anything."
For Clark, bringing awareness to the issue of prostate cancer is personal.
"My dad had prostate cancer and it's important for just the awareness of getting regular checkups," said Clark, adding his dad had surgery four years ago is has recovered. "I think due to the fact that he did get in there, they found it early enough that it hasn't been a problem.
"We will all be affected by cancer, someway or another we'll know somebody and the older you get you find more people you know have it," he added. "Anything that I can do to provide awareness from my position or in what I do I think is important."
