The leaders of the two unions representing city employees will be back before council Monday night.

Janet Bigelow and Gary Campbell, presidents of Canadian Union of Public Employees locals 1048 and 399, respectively, will be asking the mayor and councillors to attend a town hall meeting on the core services review.

The unions have been active, though unsuccessful, in attempting to get additional in-person public consultation as part of the official review process.

Last week, they hosted an evening event that brought in Toronto community organizer Sean Meagher to talk about the core review process his city underwent in the summer of 2011. The only members of council who attended were Brian Skakun and Garth Frizzell.

"We can then take that knowledge and build on our campaign and continue to speak out in an assertive, yet respectful way," Bigelow said at the Oct. 16 event at College of New Caledonia. "The power of the residents is a lot stronger than people realize. All you need to do is speak up loud and clear."

The CUPE locals will host a town hall meeting following the Nov. 1 release of the final core services review report from KPMG.

Phase Four complete

Monday's meeting will also feature an update from the select committee on a core services review, which has completed four phases.

To date, the KPMG-facilitated project has cost $285,913.81, with one phase left - the presentation of the final report.

According to the consultants, they received more than 5,000 written comments on the 193 suggested opportunities.
