Kings clip Eagles as Thompson records shutout

Kirk Thompson had the 38-save shutout as the Prince George Spruce Kings capped off a perfect weekend at home.

The 20-year-old goaltender preserved his first shutout of the B.C. Hockey League season with 18 saves in the final period as the Surrey Eagles came out firing at the Coliseum but couldn't beat Thompson as the Kings held on for a 3-0 win.

The win meant a sweep of the Kings two-game homestand after they beat the Powell River Kings on Friday. Saturday's game brought out 1,094 fans.

Cam Lawson had two goals and an assist while Shayne Morrissey notched his first BCHL goal and setup Lawson's first on a two on one to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. Morrissey's goal came when he batted in a rebound on the Kings only power play for a 2-0 advantage.

Lawson's seventh goal of the season came late in the second period when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat Eagles goalie Michael Santaguida.

The win improved Thompson's overall record to 7-3-1. With the win the Kings (7-4-1-1) now have 16 points this season and moved into first place in the Mainland division pending the outcomes of the Saturday games for the Coquitlam Express (7-3-1) and Chilliwack Chiefs (6-2-1-1).

Next action for the King is on the road for their fourth game against the Langley Rivermen (Friday, 7:15 p.m.) followed by the first meeting with the Express (Saturday, 7 p.m.).
