Terry Fox fundraising was front and centre at cole College Heights Elementary. After a week long fundraising drive, a school-wide assembly brought staff and students together to kick off an afternoon Terry Fox Run. Dick Vonuegen and Tom Masich were special guests at the assembly where they talked about their personal connection to Terry. The grade 6/7 Leadership students challenged the school community to raise $1500 to see M. St-Denis, the school principal, have his hair shaved into a mohawk, coloured, and tipped. What a sight this will be.
As well, staff and students will square off in a dodgeball game. Individual donations plus a special bake sale brought in a grand total of $1454, which rounds to $1500. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to this very worthwhile cause.
The school`s cross country running team participated in the recent Rainbow Classic run hosted by Spruceland Traditional School. Students enjoyed their run through the trails at Rainbow Park. Next up is the Heritage Classic.
October is Library Month. Though Thanksgiving has come and gone, Ecole Heather Park Elementary School students get to appreciate the harvest season all year long. Once again, throughout the school year, PAC parent volunteers help to sort and deliver to classrooms, the fresh and healthy snacks provided free of charge by the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program. Our choir began rehearsing in early October with two upcoming performances in mind: the school-wide Remembrance Day assembly and the ever-popular Christmas Nights of Music at Vanier Hall. Students will have two early dismissal days: October 10th and 11th to allow classroom teachers to meet with parents regarding the progress of their son/daughter.
On October 12th students on the top floor can spend some of their hard earned $$$ to purchase a hot lunch. Last, we would like to send out a fond 'best wishes' to our wonderful tech wizard Ming Lu who will be working his magic at other schools, and welcome aboard, Mike Buchanan.
The students, teachers and volunteer parents have been working hard again this year at the Highglen Montessori School Garden. The students of the Garden Club meet on Wednesday and Thursday at lunch to weed the garden and harvest the produce. Over the past few weeks some of our classes have enjoyed the harvest - Mrs. Dionne's and Mrs. Hoffman's class have experienced steamed beet greens and enjoyed them! One class had baked potatoes while the other had french fries. The students of Mrs. Butchart's class had Kale chips and soup. Our cabbages were gigantic - they have been harvested and with the help of parent volunteers, each student will have helped to chop produce and to prepare Coleslaw for the whole school to enjoy.
In keeping with the fall theme and Thanksgiving, the students of Mrs. Maher's class prepared cranberry sauce to bring home and enjoy as a family.
Students of the primary and intermediate drama club have auditioned for and decided on their roles for their productions. These clubs meet during lunch one day of the week starting in October until January when the performance date is set for the school and parents to enjoy.
