College Heights tops in volleyball

When pushed, the College Heights Cougars pushed back. The result was double gold at the PGYVC Junior Kodiak Classic.

In the annual high school volleyball tournament, the Cougars claimed titles in the boys and girls divisions. Championship matches were played Saturday night at the College of New Caledonia.

On the boys side, the Cougars met the Duchess Park Condors in the final and prevailed in three tough sets. The Condors won the first set 25-16 and the Cougars took the second 25-20. In the third set, College Heights completed the comeback with a 15-13 decision.

The girls final, between the Cougars and PGSS Polars, followed a similar pattern as the Polars won the opening set (25-18) but couldn't hold off a determined College Heights crew the rest of the way. The Cougars battled back to win the second set 25-21 and then outlasted the Polars 17-15 in the third.

In the bronze-medal matches, the Cedars Christian School Eagles defeated the D.P. Todd Trojans 25-22, 25-23 in the boys draw, and the Trojans beat the Chetwynd Cavaliers 25-19, 25-21 on the girls side.

Tournament MVPs were College Heights players Jared Pritchard (boys) and Madeline Doucette (girls).

Players named to the boys all-star team were Colin Appleby (College Heights), Andrew Sevill (Duchess Park), Mike Resendez (Duchess Park), Matt Janzen (Cedars), Keiran Leboe (D.P. Todd) and Josh Deans (PGSS). Girls all-stars were Morgan Redding (College Heights), Tori Kirkham (PGSS), Sydney Toninato (PGSS), Jenna Sutton (D.P. Todd), Jamie Kwiatkowski (Cedars) and Caitlin Bobisil (Correlieu).

The Classic also had a girls B division. The Cougars played in that final as well but lost 25-21, 25-21 to the Skeena Wildcats of Terrace. For bronze, Duchess Park downed D.P. Todd in three sets.

Skeena's Carly Davis was chosen as MVP and two of her teammates, Chelsea Lawset and Anke Dewit, made the all-star team. Other all-stars were Kendal Sameulson (College Heights), Megan Warner (College Heights), Ayden Martin (Duchess Park) and Megan Beaulieu (D.P. Todd).
