Victoria Street at the intersection with Fifth Avenue will be closed for one full day next week to allow city crews to connect the district energy system to the new RCMP building.

The road closure will start at 5 a.m. on Wednesday and continue until 5 a.m. on Thursday. A partial closure will remain in effect on Thursday. Traffic signs will be posted and motorists will be expected to detour around the excavation site on Vancouver Street.

The district energy system is based at Lakeland Mills on a site not affected by the April 23 explosion and fire that destroyed the Lakeland sawmill. The heating system relies on sawdust and other wood waste to provide hot water heat for civic facilities downtown, including Four Seasons Pool, the Coliseum and City Hall.

Construction of the new 63,560-square-foot RCMP headquarters, a $39 million project, is scheduled for completion by October 2013.
