Bandits to represent P.G. in lacrosse tourney

A month after they were swept by their Prince George rivals in the senior C lacrosse best-of-seven final the BX Pub Bandits are back on the floor this weekend in Coquitlam.

The senior C lacrosse championship takes place in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam and the Bandits will be the lone representative from Prince George.

The champion College Heights Pub Assault couldn't find enough players for the Friday to Sunday tournament.

Ryan Bellamy, captain of the Bandits, said after a disappointing end to their Prince George Senior Lacrosse League season which saw them finish the regular season at 13-2 on top of the league, it's going to be good to get back on the floor.

"The time off has been good and we expect to be competitive in every game," said Bellamy.

The Bandits begin their quest for a senior C championship today, 3 p.m. against Maple Ridge, followed by a game at 8 p.m. against Red Deer, Alta. Saturday the Bandits play the Vancouver Burrards, 9 a.m. and the always competitive Port Coquitlam Express at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament wraps up Sunday with the playoff round.

"It's a step up in calibre and seeing how we stack up in terms of the province," said Bellamy.

The Bandits will be led offensively by Drew Doig (87 points in 15 games) and Damon Calfa (104 points in 13 games), while Jamie Bellamy should provide a solid presence in net. There are 10 members of the Bandits who made the trip to the Lower Mainland and, Bellamy said they've arranged to pick up a few players in Vancouver to fill out the roster.
