It was mixed results for the Prince George select teams as the 2012 BC soccer provincial tournaments began Thursday.

With five Prince George Youth Soccer Association teams competing for their respective BC titles the result was three wins and two losses on the first day of competition. The three boys teams are in Aldergrove while the under-16 girls are in Kamloops and the under-15 girls in Kelowna.

The under-16 A girls maintained their perfect season record with a 2-1 win over the West Vancouver Rangers.

Victor Santos, coach of the under-16 girls, said his team dominated the first 40 minutes to head into the half with a 2-0 advantage on goals from Aimee Qualizza and Tenlye Pearce.

"The girls really played to the potential I thought they could play," said Santos. "They've been playing well all year but this was by far the best game we've played."

The Rangers pulled within one early in the second half but PGYSA goalkeeper Keely Finch withstood the early pressure and her team returned to their first-half form to take control of the match in the final 25 minutes.

The PGYSA U16 girls put their 11-0 season record on the line today against Port Moody, 1:30 p.m.

The PGYSA Kodiaks U15 girls also earned a victory on the first day of competition with a 3-0 shutout of Comox. On the boys' side, the under-18 Kodiaks opened with a 5-0 win against the Saanich Fusion.

But the other two boys' Kodiaks teams didn't have as much luck, as the under-17 squad fell 3-0 to Lakehill while the under-14 B team was edged 2-1 by Victoria's Prospects Lake SC. Today the under-17 boys take on the Creston Blitz, 3 p.m., and the under-14 B boys face off against the Kootenay South BigHorns, 3 p.m.

The under-18 Kodiaks go for their second win today, 3 p.m., versus the Nelson Selects.
