Cyclists at centre of more crashes

Following a mishap at the entrance to Masich Place stadium on Monday, there have since been two more cyclist-caused traffic accidents where the rider was at fault, Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said Friday.

On Wednesday morning, a 22-year-old man was issued a ticket for riding on the sidewalk and riding without a helmet under the Motor Vehicle Act, adding up to $158 in fines.

According to witness accounts to RCMP, the man lost control while riding down Connaught Hill Road at a high rate of speed and struck an eastbound vehicle on Patricia Boulevard.

And on Thursday afternoon, RCMP were called to a report of a collision between a bicycle and a pickup truck at Westwood Drive and 22nd Avenue.

Police believe the boy had darted into the crosswalk while still on his bike just as the driver was pulling out from the stop sign to turn right. However, the boy was wearing a helmet and was able to jump off the bike before impact.

"The youth was given a warning not to ride on a crosswalk," Douglass said.

On Monday afternoon, a 17-year-old cyclist was issued tickets for riding on the sidewalk and without a helmet following a collision at Masich Place.

All three cyclists were transported to University Hospital of Northern B.C. with minor injuries.

Helmets at cost are available from the Prince George Brain Injury Group, Douglass noted. For more information on the Prince George Brain Injury Group and the services they offer, go to www.pgbig.ca or e-mail pg...@northernhealth.com.
