Locals swinging for Summer Games spots

They'll be aiming for the greens. At the same time, they'll be targeting spots in the 2013 Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games.

Nine members of the local Special Olympics program are in 100 Mile House this weekend for a regional golf tournament that will help determine participation in the 2013 multi-sport gathering. The players entered in the tournament, being held at Marmot Ridge, are Marinka Van Hage, Greg Cole, Greg Eveneshen, Sam Russell, David Dunn, David Ryckman, Josh Pudney, Daniel Lafernie and Barb Conway. All will tee up in divisions specific to their abilities and their scores will be added to some previous totals to decide the Summer Games qualifiers.

Golf was added to the Special Olympics lineup last year.

"I think it's great," said coach Jason Lewis. "From what I've experienced in the times that I've been there [for practices], everybody seems to be enjoying themselves. It may rain sometimes but they still all have smiles on their faces and are loving it."
