Dear Editor,

Plans to eliminate the outdated AirCare program have been met with incredibly strong public support. And rightfully so. Today’s emission-controlled cars and light trucks are no longer the main source of pollution on our roads, and keeping the program going would not likely have achieved any significant improvements over what has already been achieved.

Shifting the focus to other sources of pollution on our roads makes much more sense at this point in time. Plus, there is every reason to believe that electric and clean natural gas vehicles will be showing up on our roads in increasing numbers over the next decade.

The AirCare staff deserve our thanks for the improvements in air quality they’ve helped to bring about in this province. Now it’s time to move on the bigger and more pressing air quality challenges and build on what has been accomplished over the past two decades.
