As school begins, RCMP in Prince George ask drivers to keep a keen eye out for children.
"Sadly every year in B.C. there is an average of 16,655 crashes involving children from five to 15 years," said Cst. Lesley Smith, media relations officer.
"During the past five years, these crashes have resulted in 5,350 in juries and 26 deaths involving cyclists, pedestrians and passengers of motor vehicles."
No matter who ultimately makes the wrong choice in any collision someone's life will change and it could happen to your child, so we ask all drivers to be aware and remain cautious on the roadways during this busy time of year, said Smith, who sends along the following safety tips.
Students should:
- Remove headphones from Ipods and MP3 Players when crossing the roadways
- Use designated crossing points and follow the crossing signals where available
- Dress to be seen as daylight hours decrease by wearing brighter colors or reflective material.
- Walk on the sidewalk, or on the side of the road facing the traffic
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
Drivers should:
- Plan ahead and watch for children near crosswalks and intersections
- Always yield to pedestrians
- Stop and allow children to exit vehicles onto the sidewalk during drop-offs in school zones.
