Colin Carson can look forward, and see a bright future.

The Prince George volleyball product has parlayed a strong freshman season for the Thompson Rivers University into a spot on the junior national team.

Carson, a Duchess Park grad, was one of the leading assist-getters in Canada West volleyball last season, and the setter further impressed the selection committee by helping the under-21 B.C. club to fifth spot at nationals.

Carson is the second TRU player to make the national team. Gord Perrin of Creston accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.

"I am very excited to have this opportunity to play at the international level," Carson said in a TRU release.

"There are so many fantastic players across Canada. To receive the opportunity to represent my country -- I am honoured."

Carson is in Gatineau, Que., preparing with the rest of the team for the NORCECA tournament, which will take place next month. Greg Barthel is putting the team through training at the Volleyball Canada training site.

You can count TRU coach Pat Hennelly among those excited with this news.

"It is great for Colin Carson and the WolfPack program that he made the junior national team program," said Hennelly.

"He gained a lot of confidence in his rookie campaign for us and improved throughout the year. Colin dealt with the pressure of setting for our program through the regular season, playoffs and nationals. I know Colin will be a great ambassador for our program, for the city of Prince George, and for his home high school of Duchess Park."

Following the NORCECA event, Carson will be back in Prince George to help instruct at a volleyball camp at CNC, Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
