Acceptable File Formats Print E-mail

PDF (Portable Document Format)
The Citizen strongly encourages the use of PDF files created using Adobe® Acrobat Distiller.

Basic settings for Acrobat Distiller:

  • Use the default PressOptimized settings with the following changes:
  • General Resolution: 600-1200 dpi;
    Color Image Downsampling: 150-300 dpi
    Grayscale Downsampling: 150-300 dpi;
    Monochrome: 600-1200 dpi.

When distilling start with the lower resolutions (600/150). View the pdf. If the quality is not acceptable try increasing the resolution and re-distill. (Most files look fine using the lower resolutions, resulting in a small file that can be sent quickly via the internet.)

NOTE: If you submit PDFs with RGB images they will automatically be converted to CMYK at the time of publishing and may not produce the desired results. Also, if fonts are not properly embedded substitution may occur causing undesirable results.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not recommend using the PDF writer driver for high quality images. The PDF writer should only be used for ads that do not contain any graphic images as it automatically downsamples images to screen resolution. To maintain image quality create a postscript file and distill using Acrobat Distiller which can control downsampling of graphic images.

  Other Formats*
Most programs have the ability to "Save as File" which creates a postscript (PS) file. This is another acceptable format but is not easily proofed before submitting your ad to us. Be sure a printed-proof is submitted via fax or mail so our Prepress department can compare the printed-proof with the postscript file.
