On Friday The Citizen ran an article regarding a study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. According to the study released Thursday, the spending by City of Prince George rose at 2.89 times the rate of inflation plus the city's population growth between 2000 and 2007, the highest among the province's municipalities with over 25,000 residents. But, how did other area communities score in the Canadian Federation of Independent Business report on municipal spending between 2000 and 2007? Here's a look: Quesnel: Spending rose 39 per cent, to $16.7 million from $12 million, while population plus inflation rose 9.5 per cent for a ratio of 4.16, the third highest among 23 towns between 7,500 and 15,000 population. To keep the ratio at one in 2007, spending would have had to be reduced by $3.6 million. Per capita spending in 2007 was $1,681, sixth highest in its population category. Vanderhoof: Spending rose 29 per cent, to $3.6 million from $2.8 million, while population plus inflation rose 6.3 per cent, a ratio of 4.61, 17th highest among municipalities with less than 7,500 population. To keep the ratio at one in 2007, spending would have had to be reduced by $643,889. Per capita spending in 2007 was $851 per person, 73rd highest out of 87 municipalities in its category. Burns Lake: Spending rose 44.5 per cent, to $2.4 million from $1.7 million, while population plus inflation rose 27.6 per cent for a ratio of 1.61, 49th highest among 71 towns ranked in the under 7,500 population category. To keep the ratio at one in 2007, spending would have had to be reduced by $283,395. Per capita spending in 2007 was $1,090 per person, 43rd highest out of 87 municipalities in its category. Mackenzie: Spending rose 27.8 per cent, to $8.7 million from $6.8 million, while population plus inflation declined by 4.65 per cent. No ranking was given because of the decline. Per capita spending in 2007 was $851 per person, 73rd highest out of 87 municipalities in its category. Valemount: Spending rose 2.4 per cent, to $1.435 million from $1.4 million, while population plus inflation declined by 2.7 per cent. No ranking was given because of the decline.
