The city's unemployment rate stood at 11.9 per cent in October according to Statistic Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday, a two-tenths increase from the month before. People holding down jobs in the city fell by 800 to 41,300 while those unemployed but not actively seeking work rose by 900 to 20,800 and those unemployed but actively seeking work held steady at 5,600. As a result, both the employment rate and the participation fell by 1.2 points to 61.1 and 69.4 per cent respectively. The figures also remained weaker than at the same point last year when unemployment for October stood at 6.9 per cent and 46,900 people were employed, 3,500 were unemployed but seeking work and 16,700 were inactive. Over the past year, the unemployment rate has reached as high as 12 per cent -- in July and August -- and has been as low as 5.3 per cent, reached in November. The figures are based on a three-month rolling average.
