The Christmas fantasyland enjoyed for the past two years atop Connaught Hill is being extended to the downtown core this year, says an official with Tourism Prince George.
Manager Sherry Powney said the plan is to extend the Northern Lights Festival into the downtown area where merchants will light up their businesses and participate in ways to create a magical, traditional Christmas atmosphere.
"The city will put up snowflakes and fairy lights along Third Avenue and we have students in 10 schools making snowflakes to decorate some of the empty buildings downtown. We are seeking donations of used Christmas decorations from the community to complement our snowflakes-and-trees theme this year. We will be painting windows and adding lit-up trees to vacant properties." Donations can be dropped off at Tourism Prince George, 1300 First Ave.
The holiday season in downtown Prince George will kickoff Nov. 21 with the following events:
** Opening of Northern Lights Festival Light on Connaught Hill (Nov. 21 to Jan. 2) at 4 p.m. The display is open to the public from 5 to 10 p.m. daily. Tickets are $10 per vehicle available at the bottom of the hill, Northern Hardware, Homework and Tourism Prince George.
** Light up of Third Avenue.
**Wilson Square light up is from 2 to 5 p.m. with Christmas music and a visit from Santa Claus. Hot chocolate will be provided at the nearby Fire Pit, 1120 Third Ave.
Season events:
**Northern Hardware will celebrate its 90th anniversary during the Nov. 21 weekend.
**Santa Clause will be at Northern Hardware from 1 to 3 p.m. during the four Saturdays preceeding Christmas.
**Santa's Mailbox to post letters to Santa Claus, North Pole, HOH OHO, will be at Pawsitively Gifted, 1234 Fourth Ave.
**Seniors Tea, hosted by Shirley Bond, MLA for Prince George-Valemount, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 29 at Ramada Hotel. There will be door prizes, entertainment and a bus to take guests to view the downtown lights at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.
**The Citizen will publish a special Traditional Christmas Downtown feature on Nov. 19 to celebrate the event and encourage shoppers to come on down. Turn to The Citizen for details.
